Nanoscale chemical analysis of beam‐sensitive polymeric materials by cryogenic electron microscopy

Nanoscale chemical analysis of functional polymer systems by electron microscopy, to gain access into degradation processes during the materials life cycle, is still a formidable challenge due their beam sensitivity. Here systematic study on different stages in P3HT-PCBM organic photovoltaic (OPV) model system presented. To this end pristine samples, samples with (reversibly) physisorbed oxygen and water (irreversibly) chemisorbed are imaged utilizing full capabilities cryogenic STEM-EELS. It found that largely leading significant effects band structure, especially for PCBM. Quantification proves concomitantly decreases amount C-C bonds increases C-O-C sample. Finally, it shown pulsed microwave cavity, damage can be significantly reduced which likely extends possibilities such studies future.

This letter is meant to make scientists aware of the proper application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the assessment of polymeric self-assemblies. Cryogenic (cryo)-TEM should be the method of choice.
